#27 The Fulkerson Family Vault/Veteran Graves

Looking to the north is the vault for the Fulkerson family in which the elder Fulkersons are entombed in what is known as the Fulkerson Cemetery. This family was among some of the earliest non-native settlers in Santa Rosa having travelled here via wagon train led by their son-in-law, Thompson Mize (the first burial in Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery).

To the left and downhill you will see a number of small military gravestones. The bulk of these stones represent the graves of individuals who fought in the Civil War. The California legislature required in 1889 that each county provide gravesites for Civil War veterans of limited means. There are approximately 172 veterans of the Civil War and Mexican War buried in this cemetery, including thirteen Civil War Confederate veterans and 23 Mexican War veterans.
