#9 Phebe Fulkerson Harris and Samuel Harris
Phebe: About 1797 – May, 25 1899
Samuel: July 19, 1796 – November 16, 1864
Phebe and Samuel were in-laws of Thompson Mize and came west on the same wagon train as Thompson and many other family members. The Harris’s are among the earliest birthdates we have in this cemetery.
Samuel was a veteran of the War of 1812, having served as an 18-year-old boy at the Battle of New Orleans with Andrew Jackson. This battle was fought weeks after the Treaty of Ghent was signed, ending the war. Needless to say, communication was slow!
Samuel is one of three veterans we have of the War of 1812. When he died in 1869, his obituary took up one column inch in the newspaper. When Phebe died many years later, her obituary was many inches longer – and all about Samuel!
