#18 Carrillo Family Plot

Julio Carrillo: December 20, 1824 – October 30, 1889

This is the Carrillo family plot. The Carrillo family was the first non-native family in Santa Rosa. Maria Carrillo arrived in Santa Rosa in 1837. She had received a land grant from her son-in-law, General Mariano Vallejo. She settled the area with her eight children and died in 1849. Julio Carrillo, her son, owned most of the Carrillo family land. He gave the property which currently is Courthouse Square to the City in the 1850’s. He later fell on hard times and became a lamplighter at the Courthouse, but still was a very well-liked character throughout the town. When he died in 1889, his was the largest funeral the city had ever seen. His tombstone disappeared from this site but was replaced in 1997.
