#6 Colonel James Armstrong
August 20, 1824 – October 15, 1900
Colonel James Armstrong is the highest-ranking Civil War veteran in the Cemetery, having served for the North in the 134th Ohio Infantry. During his service, he was captured by Confederate soldiers. He was granted a furlough to save his horse, and in a harrowing escape at night, he was able to return to Northern lines.
A conservationist, Colonel Armstrong became active in the Sonoma County lumber industry in 1874 and in 1880 started the process of donating 490 acres of old growth redwoods as the first parcel toward the 805-acre Armstrong Woods State Preserve.
He also purchased the Santa Rosa Republican newspaper and worked as its editor. He contributions to the Cloverdale community were so significant that he was called the Father of the Cloverdale Citrus Fair.
