#2 “Grand Army of The Republic” Memorial

This is the memorial to the Veterans of the Civil War and Spanish American War. This memorial was put up by various lodges and the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of union veterans of the Civil War. It was built in 1915 and dedicated on Memorial Day of that year – fifty years after the end of the Civil War. The 119 mortar balls are replicas mounted in 1998 and funded by community sponsorship. The originals were removed and used for scrap during the Second World War. There were also three 37 mm cannons of the Spanish American War period. They were replaced in 2005 by replicas of Civil War era cannons.
