#11b Berthold “Barney” Henry Hoen

July 6, 1822 – August 7, 1885

Two of Santa Rosa’s founding fathers, Berthold Hoen and Feodor Hahman set up shop in the Carrillo adobe in the early 1850s, then spent years promoting and developing the city. In 1854, Barney Hoen campaigned to bring the county seat to Santa Rosa, and, in 1867, the town was granted incorporation by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors.  The State of California affirmed the incorporation in 1868. The coming of the railroad in 1870 fortified Santa Rosa’s success, and the population increased tenfold.
